Permaweb-powered privacy that’s accessible to anyone

An update from Anyone Protocol, the privacy-centric DePIN building on Arweave and AO.

GM fellow Arweaver!

With the crypto industry highly focused on privacy currently, what better time than now to look at Anyone Protocol. This is a fascinating project that touches Arweave and AO in more ways than one.

Let's dive right in.

Privacy, Permanence, and Anyone Protocol🛡️

Anyone Protocol is a leading DePIN project focused on enhancing online privacy through its triple-encrypted onion routing network. The decentralized network is globally supported by relay operators, who are rewarded for their bandwidth contribution in $ANYONE tokens.

With streamlined developer SDKs, a plug-and-play hardware router, an iOS app, and an Android version coming soon, Anyone is well on track to create an accessible privacy-centric ecosystem.

So how does this project line up with Arweave and the permaweb?

Anyone and the permaweb

Anyone’s Principal Architect is none other than Jim Toth, experienced Arweave developer and creator of Wuzzy Search, the Grand Prize winner of the recent Agents of the Permaweb hackathon. The network leverages AO Computer for its rewards dashboard, offering an efficient way for node owners to manage their relay operations. While the $ANYONE token is natively minted as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, a bridged version is also supported on AO.

The project actively participates in permaweb infrastructure as a gateway operator. Using their ArNS ar.anyone.tech, you can access onchain sites and apps, like StarGrid Battle Tactics, for example, at stargrid.ar.anyone.tech.

Forward Research grant update

Anyone Protocol was also the recipient of a Forward Research grant earlier this year. Their recent Success Writeup article provides plenty of insight into what they’ve been working on.

Anyone’s grant developed over time, starting with data collection and visualization, to later deploying HyperBEAM nodes across development, staging, and production environments. This hands-on involvement with the hyper parallel computer led them to discover a critical bug allowing unauthorized node shutdowns, which has since been fixed by the HyperBEAM team.

They’ve also been involved with Docker build optimizations and documentation improvements to enhance developer experience and efficiency.

Anyone’s next steps on the permaweb

The team is focusing on migrating all their AO Processes to HyperBEAM, including the operator registry (for thousands of relay nodes), relay rewards (based on live bandwidth data), and staking.

Metrics on the dashboard are expected to get an upgrade, using HyperBEAM for peripheral relay data, while leveraging pre-computation for deeper JSON states stored on Arweave.

They’re also exploring whitelisting and rate-limiting to safely handle thousands of users, as part of their aim to create resilient, geographically distributed infrastructure for advanced privacy features.

The vision, reach, and speed of development that Anyone brings to the permaweb ecosystem is highly encouraging. It’s also reflective of other cross-chain partnerships we see forming at the intersection of DePIN and tamper-proof storage; many of which are made possible thanks to the work of AR.IO and Onboard.

Did you know that the popular developer publication Hackernoon stores copies of all its content on Arweave? Hackernoon is one of the oldest adopters of permanent storage.

Phil Mataras celebrated the fact with an infinite-scroll website to showcase the full library of decentralized articles. Check it out at hackernoon.ar.io.
