With each new project that comes onchain, the permaweb stack becomes stronger, more capable, and easier to use. Wuzzy is the latest example of this. As a permaweb-native search engine powered by autonomous agents, it’s generating quite a buzz in the community.
Let's get into it.
Meet Wuzzy Search 🔎
Last week’s AWS outage caused chaos across the internet. During this time, Arweave continued to produce blocks, while AR.IO posted solid network statistics. The case for a resilient, censorship-resistant internet couldn’t be more timely, but there’s much more to a fully decentralized stack than storage and gateways.
One big unlock in permaweb usability is the ease of access that a native search engine provides, which is exactly what Memetic Block is working on. Built on Arweave and AO, Wuzzy Search offers a context-rich method to explore permaweb content.
Let’s take a look at the origins of this project and the tech that makes a permaweb-powered search engine possible.
Agents of the Permaweb winner
Wuzzy came into the community spotlight during the recent Agents of the Permaweb hackathon, taking home the $25,000 grand prize for the most innovative and impactful agent. Wuzzy was created by Memetic Block, a software guild led by Jim Toth, seasoned Arweave developer and contributor to Anyone Protocol. You can see the live demo Jim gave to the judges here (fast forward to the 59-minute mark).
How Wuzzy works
At the heart of Wuzzy is a hub-and-spoke architecture. The Wuzzy Nest serves as the central hub, storing crawled content, managing the document database, running advanced search algorithms, and providing a RESTful query interface.
Distributed Wuzzy Crawlers act as autonomous spokes, specializing in domains, discovering links, and processing content. Each component operates independently as an AO process, leveraging message-based communication, parallel execution, and state persistence on Arweave.
Search itself is powered by two algorithms: a fast, simple search for real-time queries, and the BM25 algorithm for relevance ranking. Wuzzy supports both traditional web protocols (HTTP/HTTPS) and permaweb standards (ARNS domains, Arweave transaction IDs), bridging the gap between the conventional and decentralized web.
Wuzzy’s GitHub is a great place to start if you’d like to dive deeper into the tech specs. It’s open for community contribution, so feel free to get involved in this evolving project.
The permaweb stack keeps improving
Though still in alpha release (v0.0.4), Wuzzy Search marks a major step forward for permaweb navigability. The road ahead looks promising, with several planned upgrades including semantic search, multi-media support, and AI-powered content classification. With all that said and done, it’s time for you to try out this new permaweb search engine at wuzzy.arweave.net.
