Arweave excels at archiving, but preservation is where its real value shows. Like food kept in the freezer to be cooked or eaten later, data on Arweave stays ready for the moment it's needed.
Let's see some use cases where preserving data on Arweave can make a real difference.
The permaweb as a tool for permanent preservation 🐘
Romania's land registry was wiped clean this month. A hacker got into the National Agency for Cadastre and Real Estate Advertising, mapped the internal systems, and deleted the database after a failed extortion attempt.
The agency is rebuilding its network from scratch. Meanwhile, notaries can't record new transactions and citizens can't get proof of ownership. Had there not been an offline backup, the situation could have been far worse.
Romania now joins a growing list of countries whose land registries have been hit, which points to something bigger than a single data breach. Centralizing critical data puts everything at risk for the individuals and organizations who depend on it.
Arweave offers a fitting solution, with its massive replication set and no single point of failure to wipe out. Here are a few areas where that kind of security and redundancy matters most.
Languages on the brink
According to UNESCO studies, almost 40% of the world’s 7,000 languages are at risk of disappearing, with one lost roughly every two weeks.
Organizations like the Endangered Languages Archive are engaged in this important work today, but their resources typically depend on external funding. Arweave's unique storage endowment model keeps data secured permanently and instantly retrievable, with no dependence on third-party grants or donations.
The blockweave is the ideal platform to preserve text, audio, and video recordings of a language for future generations to learn from and keep historical ties strong.
Places that won't stay the same
Globalization, deforestation, and community displacement threaten more than languages. Historic buildings, glaciers, and coral reefs are examples of places that are changing or disappearing, some through natural processes and some through human activity.
Detailed scans and 3D modelling can capture these locations in precise detail at a given point in time. Arweave can turn one-time scans into references that stay available permanently, always on-hand for restoration efforts, education, or comparison against what a place looked like decades earlier. Making a difference can be as simple as storing raw coordinates on Arweave to be accessed and activated in the relevant software at any time.
Cultural moments, saved by anyone
Permanent storage isn't limited to organizations and equipment-intensive initiatives. Arweave is open, permissionless, and transparent, meaning any individual is free to contribute to preservation efforts.
Preserving culture can be as straightforward as saving a tweet. Permabutler, a permaweb initiative enabling individuals to freely curate and preserve moments of public interest, is a great example of this.
Preservation can also mean capturing something deeply personal. Grandma’s last interview, pictured above, preserves the smile of an Arweaver's grandmother from their final conversation together. Storing it permanently on Arweave keeps it exactly as it was, long after the memory alone would start to fade.
More than a snapshot
Preservation doesn't mean that something is stored and forgotten. Forever Garden, an open-source communal gardening project, has captured more than 120 game state records on Arweave as gardeners plant and grow flowers in a shared digital garden.
Each snapshot is an actionable game state that can be read from and built on, keeping years of gardener activity available and usable. The snapshots can also be used to render a time-lapse, allowing visitors to relive the garden’s growth. And in line with the long-term vision befitting the Arweave community, gardeners can leave encrypted letters in the garden that only become readable 100 years in the future.
These records are more powerful than snapshots or singular moments in time. Stored data has value when it's easily accessible to be retrieved and activated, as opposed to being out of reach in a vault.
From cultural moments and shared gameplay to human creations and the natural world around us, preserving data on Arweave ensures it can be used the moment it's needed, whether that's today, tomorrow, or in two hundred years.
