Democratizing Arweave Mining with Wander Pools

How to mine on the permaweb using macOS.

Contribute to the Arweave network with your hard drive! If you have some spare disk space on a macOS device, this is a great opportunity to try your hand at Arweave mining.

Let's dive right in.

Wander Pools opens up beta access ⛏️

It’s no secret that Arweave mining requires a technical lift to get going. Miners need to understand hardware and software to get things going. However, there’s a huge opportunity for Arweave to expand via more pathways to mining. Wander is providing the first such alternative path to contributing to the Arweave network.

The team at Wander took on this challenge and introduced Wander Pools earlier this year. Now the initiative has kicked off, letting anyone participate in permanent storage. Well, almost anyone, we’ll get on to that soon.

Beta is live, bugs are being squashed, and points are being rewarded. Let’s see how you can get involved in Wander Pools.

Mining through a desktop app

Wander Pools ships with the goal of democratizing access to Arweave mining. It really is as simple as downloading a desktop app and contributing some idle storage to the network. Just like certain large-scale Bitcoin mines allow users to pool together their resources and share block rewards, Wander does the same but for decentralized data storage.

Last week, they announced the launch of Pools beta, open specifically to macOS users. You can choose the right download type by selecting either the Intel or M1 (and later) versions. Wander Pools will be made available on different operating systems in the future, but there is no exact timeline on when additional operating systems will be supported.

It’s worthwhile noting that mining in Wander Pools does not reward users in Arweave’s native $AR token, but in Wander’s own $WNDR fair launch token. During the beta program, users can earn points for their storage contributions, which can later be redeemed for $WNDR. The points to $WNDR token rewards conversation ratio will be announced after the beta phase. The storage that is contributed is of course utilized by the Arweave network.

Wander Pools Bug Bounty

From now until December 26, Wander Pools beta users can earn additional rewards by reporting their bug findings. A successful “regular” bug report can earn you 50 points, while a “critical bug” report can earn 500 points.

You’ll need to sign up to the Wander Discord to submit your reports as support tickets.

Get started on Wander Pools

The Wander team has done a fantastic job streamlining the onboarding process. All you need to do is follow these 5 simple steps:

  1. Go to wander.app/pools to download the macOS desktop app.
  2. Open the install file, drag the icon into your Applications folder, and open it from there.
  3. Sign in with Wander Connect or enter an existing Arweave address.
  4. Grant permissions for storage access, background processing, and analytics (optional).
  5. Choose your storage amount.

Check out Wander’s blog post for more detailed instructions and a guide to navigating the app.

This is a fantastic entry point to mining on Arweave, with no blockchain or developer expertise needed and no other hardware required than a macOS device and some idle hard drive space.
