A solid first year on the ar.io mainnet

A full year of data highlights the strength of the permanent cloud.

GM fellow Arweaver!

The ar.io network recently completed 1 year on mainnet. Permanent Data Solutions founder Phil Mataras shared some impressive numbers to mark the occasion.

Let’s take a look.

Inside ar.io’s mainnet metrics 📊

The ar.io elephant logo centered over a bright, abstract digital wave background in purple and blue. There’s a lot going on under the hood at ar.io, with gateways, the Arweave Name System, and Turbo to name a few. The ar.io team and the community of gateway operators play a fundamental role in the permaweb, ensuring data remains accessible and resilient against failures or censorship.

It’s impressive to see how their numbers appear after a full year on mainnet. More than growth, these stats showcase the philosophical underpinnings of a decentralized web where data is sovereign, free from central control, and built to thrive in volatility.

The numbers below were shared in Phil’s must-see video, which had something of a unique vibe to it.

Movement in metrics

The first year of mainnet translated into significant usage and healthy network stats for ar.io:

  • 656 gateways are running independently around the world, each operator contributing with their own hardware to make the permaweb accessible to all.
  • $2.1 million flowed through the network in ecosystem revenue.
  • 1.07 billion data requests occurred over a recent 90-day timespan.
  • 46 gateway releases mean an average of one update every eight days. Consistent shipping serves as a powerful confidence signal for the community.
  • 58,000 monthly uploaders provide proof of real-world usage of permaweb infrastructure.

When you add these stats to recent reflections on the size of AO’s codebase and its rapid expansion, the progress on the permaweb becomes truly undeniable.

What’s next?

Together with the recent rebrand, these numbers position ar.io perfectly for the next stage of growth, as the team builds on existing partnerships while attracting novel use cases through initiatives like Project Continuum.

The need for the permaweb is glaringly obvious. Serious trust issues are present in the digital space, from censorship and data loss to misinformation and content theft. The ar.io team helps by scaling a permanent cloud that's accessible and reliable. Providing solutions for use cases like media provenance and verifiable AI data is critical as cyberspace becomes overwhelmed with slop.

This is also about creating and maintaining infrastructure that's durable and inclusive, reducing barriers so individuals can participate without gatekeepers.

More gateways, less gatekeepers

The encouraging thing about ar.io’s growth is that it exemplifies the commitment of a wider community effort. Over 600 gateways operating around the globe, providing resilient access to the permaweb, is a feat to be celebrated.

If you feel inspired, why not help out too? It’s easy to get on board and join hundreds of gateway operators. You can even get started with a simple Raspberry Pi setup.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s been unfolding across Arweave and AO.

This week's community feature 🧑‍💻

Text reading “Merdi Kim” next to a circular cartoon avatar of a man on a white background Merdi Kim has released aoform-toolkit, an independent fork of AOForm that updates the CLI to be fully hyperBEAM-compatible for deploying AO processes via YAML files.

The tool optimizes the deployment workflow by maintaining a local state and only re-sending source code when changes are detected. Check it out at npmjs.com/package/aoform-toolkit.
