Remix the internet to your own liking

PermawebOS Seed paves the way to a more personalized cyberspace.

GM fellow Arweaver!

AO is coming to life with relentless developer activity and a focus on personal expression. A prime example of this is PermawebOS Seed, a framework at the intersection of data storage, decentralized computation, and individual preferences.

Let's mix things up!

Planting the seeds for a more personal internet 🌱

Silhouette of a person standing in mist with a radiating, pixelated rainbow light effect. After a mysterious countdown on AO’s timeline, the PermawebOS Seed sprouted on March 20. If you’ve been watching recent Sam Williams interviews, you may have had an inkling of what was to come, as Sam had been discussing the concept of remixing the internet with Drew Pierson.

This idea goes far deeper than repurposing content, as Arweave’s open data lake provides individuals with the opportunity to rebuild apps to their own liking. With tools like aoDevBot readily available to all, along with several incredible AI models, the barrier to entry for developing on the permaweb has basically been removed.

PermawebOS Seed builds upon this concept, and there’s an opportunity for you to get involved, regardless of your skill level.

How to participate

To kickstart the PermawebOS Seed campaign, the AO team is running a community contest. Each week, $35 prizes (in $AR) are being handed out to the top 2-4 forks.

Here’s a quick-step guide on how to get involved:

  1. Hop into the AO Discord, where you’ll find a video and instructions in the permawebos-seed channel.
  2. Choose an official seed app in the announcement post (or any permaweb app with a code tag in its headers).
  3. Fork your version using the code provided. The agent will find the source, make changes, and deploy to Arweave.
  4. Showcase your build on X and tag @aoTheComputer and #PermawebOS.

The weekly deadline is Thursday, 11:59 PM EDT, with winners announced on the following Tuesday.

Community remixes

Several Arweavers have already tried their hand at remixing the official seed apps: Public Square, Groupthink, and Fork Visualizer (lite).

Benjamin Brandall quickly staked his claim to performing the fastest fork ever, reworking Public Square, an open forum on Arweave, in under 5 minutes. Impressive.

Jonny Ringo brought music and vibes to his personal recreation of Fork Visualizer (lite). Check out the sleek graphics on the final product.

Meanwhile, Merdi Kim has been experimenting with Groupthink. Check out his full process from spinning up Visual Studio Code to testing the app.

Over to you

Whether you want to try your own version of the official seeds or you feel more adventurous and want to iterate on another permaweb app, the process is super simple and open to everyone.

The easiest way to get involved and fast-track your learning is to participate in the AO Discord.

We’re excited to see what creative apps you recreate. Have fun remixing!
