The permanent cloud network in numbers

Catch up on the partnerships, innovations, and network stats behind AR.IO’s continued success.

GM!

With rising metrics, successful campaigns, and several notable partnerships, AR.IO’s progress over the past few months has been relentless. Founder Phil Mataras gave an insightful talk at Arweave Day Asia, providing us with an opportunity to reflect on the network’s success.

Let’s get up to speed on the permanent cloud network.

State of the permanent cloud ☁️

AR.IO has evolved into a critical component in permaweb infrastructure, offering key features like gateway management, identity services, indexing, querying, and content delivery, to name but a few.

Many of these metrics are directly measurable, with Phil highlighting some impressive statistics during his presentation. While these network stats do date back a few weeks, they clearly reflect AR.IO’s growth trajectory.

Measurable network growth

The AR.IO network boasts nearly 4,000 ArNS domains, enabling human-readable names for data and identities, and just under 700 gateways for global access. Activity is healthy at 1,500 monthly active users, with over 400,000 total messages sent since launch. Data access is robust, as around 65 TB of data was streamed in the 24 hours preceding Phil’s talk, handling up to 3,000 requests per second at near-perfect success rates.

As for revenue, ArNS purchases had generated about $85,000 in fees by early October. When ArNS names are purchased, the fees are sent to the protocol balance, which rewards gateway operators over time.

Recent developments

The pace at which the PDS team ships is incredible. Here’s a snapshot of some recent achievements:

  • AR.IO has been rolling out x402 integrations, starting with monetization without middlemen through gateway access. You can learn more about x402 and its permaweb potential in last week’s newsletter.
  • Turbo services were streamlined into a single app, turbo.ar.io, offering instant top-ups and developer SDKs. In addition, Turbo now accepts $USDC payments on the Ethereum, Base, and Polygon networks.
  • ArNS undernames are now ownable, allowing people to distinguish ownership at the subdomain level. This is handy for a variety of use cases, such as individual players on an onchain game.
  • The Cloudmap got a refresh too, with full details on what’s been shipped and which new items were added. While not a traditional roadmap per se, the Cloudmap provides thematic areas of focus and intent.
  • Wayfinder updates continue to improve multi-gateway navigation. Users can leverage the browser extension to route permaweb traffic through the most efficient gateway path.

Ecosystem impact

The AR.IO team is advancing partnerships both onchain and offchain. Some notable partners include iExec for privacy tooling, Drip Haus and Manifold for NFTs, Fluence and Derad Network in DePIN, Aethir in AI, Load Network for temporary storage, and CrimRxiv Consortium for criminology journals. Much of this partnership work is supported by efforts from the @OnboardArweave team.

They’ve also had a hand in supporting permaweb builders, with over $100k in funding granted using $ARIO and $AR. Projects that have benefitted from this ongoing support include Arlink, Forever Lovable, ArNS Rewind, and ArNS Marketplace.
