GM!
Welcome to this week's Arweave Weekly Digest.
This week we're covering something pretty interesting: a new temporary storage platform built on AO, with the option to save files on Arweave.
Let's get into it.
Load Network launches temporary data storage platform on AO
Load Network, in addition to being a data availability layer for other blockchains like Ethereum, has been working on extensive tooling for the Arweave and AO ecosystem.
One such toolkit has been S3-powered developer tools: using Amazon's S3 storage standard to create SDKs for storing data on Arweave, and now more recently building out an S3-like cache layer connected to AO.
What this essentially allows for is a temporary storage layer for data not needed to be permanent - such as GDPR-related data, legal information and more. Likewise, for other more normal data, such as blog posts, it means drafts can be cached until complete, and then stored on Arweave afterwards.
This is an interesting product for users, developers, and those curious about the capabilities of Arweave and AO.
For users
For users, Load has built a web-based UI for uploading files and a button to "push" them to Arweave (i.e. put them into long-term decentralized storage).
It's integrated with Load's larger cloud platform, and users can create storage buckets. This also might be useful for teams wishing to use it like a CMS with the option to put data on Arweave.
For developers
Load S3 is currently a device running on Load's HyperBEAM node, and can be connected to like a typical S3 endpoint.
Data uploaded is already in ANS-104 DataItem format, which essentially gives it a unique ID which will remain the same if or when the data is pushed to Arweave.
Developers can use any official S3 SDKs and simply use the Load S3 endpoint along with an access key (currently being distributed by the team to developers on request).
For the technically curious
Load S3 is built on top of a HyperBEAM node (AO's node software) and runs as a device, meaning technically other HyperBEAM node runners could use Load's S3 software and also offer temporary storage services.
This is an interesting aspect of the modularity of AO.
It allows for options like these as well as offchain storage combined with onchain storage with Arweave, as well as the fact that everything is still taking place on the decentralized compute network that is AO itself.
This means that Load S3 can easily push for a more decentralized architecture as they continue to build out their storage services.
It also brings decentralized storage much, much closer in terms of UX and DX to traditional cloud services but without all of the difficulties and disadvantages they might typically come with. A pretty interesting combination.
