Supporting permaweb education for 5 years straight

GM fellow Arweaver!

A quick look through some of our best-performing content reveals something interesting: the permaweb community highly values comprehension and understanding. The posts highlighted in today's issue are must-reads for anyone looking to grasp the greater vision of Arweave (and excellent resources to share with someone new to permanent storage).

On to the good stuff.

Content that makes it all click 💡

Since launching @OnlyArweave five years ago, we've published deep-dive explainers covering everything from protocol mechanics to the philosophy behind permanent storage.

Here are some of the concepts that resonate most with the community.

Key components to permanent storage

An Arweave diagram listing the key components to permanent storage: Crypto Proof, Endowment, and Evolution.

Permanent storage on Arweave rests on three interlocking components. Cryptographic proofs verify that miners hold the data, the storage endowment converts one-time fees into a long-term funding mechanism, and an evolutionary design keeps the protocol viable across centuries.

What makes this architecture compelling is how the components reinforce each other. Proofs keep miners honest, the endowment keeps them incentivized, while incentivized evolution allows the system to adapt without compromising data.

Universal Data License

Internet platforms give creators a place to publish but retain control over the terms. Arweave’s Universal Data License (UDL) puts the control in the creator’s hands, providing a working example of what it looks like to build rights into a protocol.

UDL lets creators attach license tags to the content they upload. Terms covering aspects such as commercial use, derivatives, AI training, and pay-per-access are stored alongside the work itself.

Some key facts about Arweave's tokenomics

Black graphic with the Arweave logo above text describing its tokenomics as utility-driven and deflationary.

Arweave's native token $AR powers the incentivized storage network, rewarding miners for preserving humanity's data. Over 99% of the fixed supply of 66 million tokens is already in circulation.

At the heart of Arweave's tokenomics is the storage endowment, a protocol-managed reserve that can create a deflationary effect on $AR's total supply.

Arweave's core principles remain unchanged

Three guiding principles succinctly define Arweave’s philosophy:

  • Permanently secure the world's knowledge.
  • Ensure the right to speech in cyberspace.
  • Guarantee the right to listen.

Etched permanently onchain, these core principles stand the test of time as the blockweave grows into an open repository of truth.

Arweave has a greater purpose

The permaweb philosophy runs deep, drawing together a community spanning historians, journalists, developers, archivists, and many other individuals attracted to truth and fairness.

The common thread across all these archetypes is a shared understanding that humanity's data is at risk of deletion and manipulation. This video captures the importance of what the Arweave community is building.
